I'm Nish's son. In the early 2000s my mother gave me a box of Dad's poems that they had cut out from the newspaper when they were originally published. I began typing them to have digital copies. I'm Nish's son. In the early 2000s my mother gave me a box of Dad's poems that they had cut out from the newspaper when they were originally published. I began typing them to have digital copies. I chose to type them instead of just scanning them because it gave me an opportunity to know the poems, and through them to know my dad just a little better. None of the poems were dated, and I found out that the original newspapers were available on microfiche at a local library. I read through these to find the date of publication of each poem, and decided to write down the paper headline to help make the historical record more complete. The dates you see written on the scanned print copies were put there by me.

When possible, I have preserved the original spacing and line breaks of the original poems as they were published in the paper. This includes cases where (I think) poems with no line breaks should have had them due to limited space available on the newspaper page. In a few instances I have corrected obvious line spacing errors. I have also taken the liberty of correcting spelling errors, some of which may have occurred because Dad often phoned his poem in to the Daily News office where it was typed up by someone else.

DISCLAIMER:

As you read the poems on this website, it is occasionally important to remember the time and place in which they were published. There are some poems (and newspaper headlines) which use terminology that is uncomfortable from a 21st Century perspective, but was appropriate and legitimate in the 1970s. If you see a term that you find offensive, please remember that much of the terminology we use today when addressing some groups or situations simply did not exist yet when the poems were written. No offense was intended by my father, as none of the terms are intended to be derogatory in any way. They were simply the terms in use at the time. I will add that there are probably less than ten poems in the whole collection that may strike you this way, out of a total of about three and a half thousand. Thank you for your understanding.
